“Let’s Make Tourism Greener”

“Let’s Make Tourism Greener” is a National Tree Plantation campaign developed as an initiative of a series of activities to celebrate the World Tourism Day by The Department of Economics, University of Colombo together with UOC Tourism Alumni ATHEM

The World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on the 27th of September with a view of raising awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. This celebration seeks to further emphasize tourism's prospects and potential to contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing some of the most pressing challenges Sri Lanka as a country is encountering.

Sri Lanka being a tropical country owning a strong eco-system that has an immense supply of green-plants and also consisting of a community of people that constantly promotes ‘Environmental- Friendliness’ is however seems to be losing its significance as a result of the recent developments in construction and urbanization striking an alteration to the core values of its people. It is no doubt that a lesser degree of attention is paid for preserving the natural environment, while diverting a critical eye on technological and monetary aspects of the economy.

As one of the key responsible stakeholders in Sri-Lankan tourism, the University of Colombo in collaboration with Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) took the step towards protecting our trees in 2016 with the first National Tree Plantation campaign, which continued to the next year 2017 successfully. Under the guidance of the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) and the industrial leaders, both local and foreign, this was a very successful national level movement to raise public awareness and to share knowledge on how we can improve the standards and practice sustainable tourism in the country.

The first Campaign was held on the 25th of September 2016 with 1000 trees at the Baddegana Wetland Park with the participation of industry specialists, related authorities, the students and well-wishers who have been constant contributors in making Sri-Lanka greener.

The second campaign successfully concluded on the 25th of September 2017 at Wetland Bio Diversity Park, Thalawathugoda.
